Mini Golf Course Design

This group project is worth 20 grades (2000 points).
500 points for planning (25%)
1000 points for construction (50%)
500 points for participation in mini golf tournament. (25%)
*Up to 500 points are available in extra credit as well. (+25%)

Tournament Supplies
1. You can either go to Play it Again Sports for some used putters or order some here.
2. Golf Balls- I personally like having a bag to collect the mini golf balls at the end of each class
3. Ordering standardized golf holes made the project much more fun to play when it was competition time.

Construction Tips/Tricks

1. Using an old door (with the door handle removed) makes an excellent base for each hole. This can easily be moved and cleaned up at the end of each period.
2. Try to make each hole capable of being taken apart easily, so the fake grass and other parts can be reused, or repurposed.
2. Time frame for completion = 10-12 days. 2-3 days for planning. 5-8 days for construction. 2-3 days for the tournament. I encourage you to invite all faculty and staff to play a round during their planning period or lunch to compete against the students.

Instructions:

Students will be making 9 OR 18 mini golf holes. One year I had four classes with 18 groups.
*Each group will make either an easy (par 2), medium (par 3), or hard (par 4) hole. Three of each par are needed for every nine holes. Resulting in a standard par 54 mini golf course.
Requirements (100 points per requirement)
1. Your group must make, repurpose, or provide the "grass" area. Be creative! The course cannot be on a concrete or tiled floor. You may buy fake grass if you wish.
2. Your group may only use one 6-foot piece of new lumber from the school lab supplies. You may use as much scrap lumber as you wish. I would suggest you find some free pallets using your celly-telly. You are required to use materials other than wood.
3. The max distance from the putting start to the hole is 10 yards (30 feet).
4. The minimum distance the ball must travel from start to finish is 2 yards (6 feet).

5. You must have a standard-size golf hole. The standard size of a golf hole has a diameter of 4.25 inches.
6. Every hole must be completely portable (meaning it has to be cleaned up and moved out of the way at the end of the period so other classes can work in the shop)
7. Your hole must incorporate at least 3 types of materials (wood, metal, plastic, ceramics, synthetic, etc.) Groups are encouraged to use recycled products in the construction of their hole.
8. The playing area of each hole must be 30 inches wide or greater. This means you must be able to walk "inside" the hole when playing.
9. Construction of each hole must be durable and hold 500 lbs.+ when players walk on it.
10. You must have a 1/8" thick starting pad with a label that includes the hole number, shots required to make par, and any other pertinent instructions about your hole.

* Lowest score over the span of 72 holes will be the winner. Top 10 finishers will receive extra credit.
*All holes must fit inside the shop/classroom.

Additional Research:

If you happen to have Disney +, there is a new show called "Shop Class". Season one has a show entirely devoted to building mini golf holes. Check it out, maybe you will get some ideas.

Grading Rubric:

1. Planning & Design (500 points) Each group will turn in a detailed drawing and design for their hole. A neatly done drawing will include all measurements and a list of instructions on how you plan to make your mini golf hole.
300 points for the drawing, 200 points for writing the instructions (minimum 200 words)

200 points- written instructions, preferably typed instructions (1 point per word) Lists who is in your group, what par your hole is, and the inspiration for your design. You must include at least two paragraphs on what materials you are going to use and how you plan to construct your mini golf hole. Please include a budget of anticipated costs.
300 points for Google SketchUp Design which includes the following parts:
Sketchup Design Rubric
60 points- The golf hole is drawn to the correct size with a diameter of 4.25 inches.
60 points- The path the golf ball must go from the starting pad to the hole is 10 yards (30 feet) in length or less.
30 points- your design is saved correctly and downloaded as a 2021+ version .skp file and uploaded to Google Classroom to turn in.
30 points- All parts are drawn in 3D and all parts are full scale in your design (meaning if you are drawing 2x4s, then you would draw them to the exact size of 1.5" x 3.5")
30 points- All parts have added texture and/or color to what they will be when construction is completed.
30 points- You draw an adequate-sized starting pad, and only one section of your hole does not have barrier walls.
30 points- Your design is drawn in feet and inches.
30 points- Your file name contains the names of your group members' last names, class period, and the par of the golf hole. (Example: Wilson.Harris.Smith.per3.par4.skp)

2. Construction (1000 points) 100 points for each of the 10 requirements listed above. Each finished golf hole is worth 1000 points. If you fail to finish construction on your hole, you forfeit your entry into the mini-golf tournament.

3. Tournament Participation (500 points)- 100 points for the practice round and 100 points for each of the 4 rounds of the tournament. You must finish each round in one class period. No MULLIGANS. You will sign your scorecard at the end of each class period. Cheating will result in the forfeit of purse winnings and all points earned on the project.
