The purpose of this project is to transform the class into one or two small companies. This company will design, manufacture and sell a designated product. Examples of what could be made are shown below.
Steps of the Manufacturing Process
Limited Resources and Design Restraints-
We will be using poplar or pine wood, which are softwoods. The only consumable resources you will have are sandpaper, a small amount of nails/screws, and glue. You will have the machinery in the classroom (2 drill presses, paint booth, 3 band saws, two sanders and 2 scroll saws) Plexiglass, metal hooks, paint, key chain rings will have to be paid for by the company!
List of items that must be turned in (each number below expalains the % of final grade)
1. (10%) Hand Sketches and SketchUp drawings of your manufactured product. Load them to the Google Drive and share with [email protected].
2. (5%) A typed list of manufacturing steps explaining in detail how each part is going to be made and who will manufacture each part. Examples are on pages 179, 183, 187, 189, 213, 217 of the black manufacturing textbook. Load them to the Google Drive and share with [email protected].
3. (5%) A graphically designed logo and company name. Saved in JPEG format, loaded to the Google Drive and shared with [email protected].
4. (10%) A package designed tag that will be reproduced and tied onto each manufactured product. Load an example to the Google Drive and share with [email protected].
5. (30%) Two manufactured products for each member of the class. (One to keep, and one to have to give to someone)
6. (10%) A completed radio or TV ad (between 15 to 30 seconds in length). I suggest using Microsoft Movie Maker 2.6. This also will be uploaded to the Google Drive and shared with [email protected].
7. (10%) A spreadsheet calculating the cost of each product and suggested retail value to make a profit. The spreadsheet should also a page with "salaries and wages" of the company workers to show production costs for an entire month if this was a real company. Read Chapter 10 & 12 in the Manufacturing book for further explanation.
8. (5%) A manufacturing jig or fixture. You must make a jig or fixture that will ensure every product is made exactly the same. Upload a picture to your jig or fixture to the Google Drive and share with [email protected].
9. (5%) A document with the company meeting minutes recorded. This should be updated DAILY and shared with [email protected].
10. (10%) Group Manufacturing Grading Rubric. Your peers and teacher will grade you based on your contributions to the company based on the Virginia Workplace Readiness Skills. (You can download and print one below if you would like).
Positions of the Company
1. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or President- This person makes sure all parts of the organization are running smoothly. This person will act as a peer mediator if workers cannot get along. This person will also make sure all work is being turned in on time by appropriate workers. The CEO and COO will work together to run the company. If they disagree, the teacher will act as independent council to resolve company disputes. The CEO and COO run the company meetings to vote on things like 1. what should be made? 2. What the company name should be?
2. Chief Operating Officer (COO) or Vice President- This person organizes parts of the company to make the company work at its peak performance. The COO has authority to reassign jobs to workers so that the company will be more productive. This person makes sure each worker is on task for the entire class period.
The CEO and COO will also act as Quality Control, Safety, and Environmental Engineers- This person will be in charge of making sure each product is the same as the rest of the production, as well as making sure all machines and workers are acting in a safe manor. The last responsibility is that the work conditions are fit for the environment (i.e. the paint booth filter is cleaned)
3. Secretary- Keeps detailed notes of everyone's job and what they have accomplished each day. This person should complete a Google Document and share it with [email protected]. This should be updated DAILY!
4. Marketing Team- 2-3 students who will design the company logo, package design tag, and create the TV or radio advertisement. A package design tag should have the price, history of the company, logo, bar code and any other pertinent information needed to sell the product.
4. Senior Accountant- This person will be the company bookkeeper and make a spread sheet of A. Company salaries wages and B. cost reports on each product produced. A Google sheet will be made with two sheets (one for salaries and one for profit/loss of the product) Share the sheet with [email protected]
5. Production Manager- Completes the flow chart and instructions on how the product should be made. A chart of what materials will be needed as well as their dimensions is required as well. Examples are on pages 179, 183, 187, 189, 213, 217 of the black manufacturing textbook.
6. Manufacturing Team- Every person on the team will be part of the manufacturing team. Some people will also be on the prep team, but EVERY person in the company should have a job working in the lab. Every member of the team is responsible for the manufacturing of each product.
7. CAD Technician(s)- This person or group will generate Google SketchUp Drawings and instructions for making each product. The dimensions on the drawing must be EXACT!
8. Independent Contractors- You may "hire" Mr. Cornwell to cut things on the table saw, or to plane wood in the planer.
