Pinewood Derby Cars
Requirements
1. The car must be made out of pine wood.
2. The car must be no longer than 7 inches, taller than 5 inches, and wider than 2.75 inches.
3. You must provide 3/8" clearance under the car to use the 32 foot track.
4. Your car must weigh 5 ounces or less.
Grading Rubric
1. Length (100 points) - Must not exceed 7 inches in length. Cars longer than 7" will not be eligible for extra credit points for placing in the derby races. -10 points for each 1/16th of an inch over length.
2. Width/Height (100 points) - Must not exceed 2.75 inches in width and 5 inches tall. Cars wider than 2 3/4" will not be eligible for extra credit points for placing in the derby races. -10 points for each 1/16" over width.
3. Weight (100 points) - Must not exceed 5 ounces in weight. Cars over 5 ounces will not be eligible for extra credit points for placing in the derby races. -10 points for every .05 ounces overweight.
4. Participation/Fabrication/Aesthetics- (100 points)- Designing and fabricating a car eligible to compete will earn your final 100 points. Does your car look like your original design? Does your car look good? If you fail to meet items 1-3, you will not earn over a 300/400 grade.

Derby Car Design
You must design your car to meet the rules and regulations of a standard pinewood derby.
*You may draw an orthographic design (top, front, and side views) on paper using proper drawing tools (meaning your drawing is in pencil, NOT PEN, and drawn to scale). No freehand drawings will be accepted! All drawings must have precise and accurate measurements for all views. Your views must be centered on the piece of paper and in corresponding position (top view on the top part of the paper, side on the side of the paper, etc.)
*OR you may choose to draw your design digitally using Google SketchUp (Links to an external site.), you will have the possibility to earn up to 400 points extra credit (depending on the quality of your rendering).Your car must match your initial design to earn the full 400 points. All digital drawings must have accurate measurements as well.

Tournament Race Procedures
Seeding
1. Your car will race in a series of ten heats with four cars in each heat
2. 1st place will earn 10 points, 2nd place will earn 8 points, 3rd place will earn 5 points, and last place will earn 2 points.
3. The cars with the top four point totals for the first ten heats will be grouped for one final heat.
Double Elimination Tournament-
Preliminary races will determine seeding in a double elimination tournament for duel heat races (two cars per race). Each bracket will be best of 3 races to determine an overall winner.
