Stuff breaks when students are learning to use tools. More stuff breaks when you have a knucklehead or two in class. Here are my recommendations that have passed the "teenage smash test".
From my teacher's point of view, the WEN brand is the best value for the money. If you work for the WEN company, contact me, I would love to be sponsored:)
1. A multi tool with different attachments will help you cut and sand odd angles, as well as be able to reach places that other tools cannot.
2. A downdraft table enables students to sand without making a dusty mess in any learning environment.
3. Spindle Sanders are a must.
4. You will want five portable spindle sanders.
5. If your class goes through an abundance of sandpaper, try cabinet scrapers as a cheaper alternative.
6. It is what cabinet makers used before the invention of sandpaper. You can make your own wooden handles for these as well or purchase a ready-made holder.
7. Spiral tooth scroll saw blades.
